The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Dr. Earl Eldred can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Condolence: It's coming up on St. Patrick's day, and the one-year anniversary of Earl's passing. I just want to say Cheers to you Earl, and I'll be having a nice glass of green beer in your honor. We miss you!

Condolence: Earl was my thesis advisor between 1956 and 1960. He was a joy to work with because he was even tempered and jovial on almost all occasions. One of my favorite memories of him was the weekly trip to do experiments in the old wooden barracks behind the Long Beach VA Hospital. This was before the 405 freeway was built and this necessitated getting there and back by surface streets. He worked out a very original route, sometimes using alleys. It must have taken 1.5 hours or more and often we did not get back to our homes until midnight. He was very much an outdoor person who enjoyed hiking and was always physically fit. In his office he would suddenly jump out of his chair and drop to the floor to do a bunch of push-ups. Sometime in the late 60's Earl and his family paid us a visit when I was a faculty member of CU in Denver. He had wide-ranging interests filled with interesting details. He liked to learn things and impart what he learned. Always friendly, yet to this day, I have no idea where he stood politically. That is a model of discretion. We will always miss him.

Condolence: As my colleague at UCLA, Earl was always so special to me in so many ways. I always thought, if I could only reach the heights that he lived every day as a beautiful, kind person and as a model scientist, I would be forever accomplished. He was my idol as a person and a scientist.I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to share so many fun times in the lab with Earl during experiments lasting way into the night.

Condolence: So sorry to hear about Earl. My condolences to you and your family, Dan.

Earl was a great mentor and friend. After having spent five intensive years with your father, my memories of him remain strong. We spent many long nights over many cats, trying to extract “data” that might be of use for my thesis. Earl was unique among the faculty in that he was directly involved in students' experiments. Those long nights had a lasting impact on my approach to science. I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to have worked with him and learned from him. And I'll always remember with fondness our backpack trip on the Muir trail - an appropriate highlight that complemented the endurance required to finish a dissertation. I only wish I could have spent more time with him after I left UCLA.

Condolence: A truly unique man. Our family stayed with Earl and Berg on our first visit to the USA from New Zealand. One the very first day we arrived he rounded us up and we embarked a on lengthy walk of the surrounding area with Earl commenting on points of interest. He was an encyclopaedia of knowledge and I found him to be one of the most interesting and hospitable gentlemen I have had the pleasure of meeting. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.

Condolence: I was a member of the same Boy Scout troop that Dr. Eldred's sons belonged to in Encino, California. Dr. Eldred took three of us young scouts on our first 10-mile hike! It was a great night hike from Encino to UCLA. I still remember the feeling of accomplishment and the exhilaration of completing a challenging hike.
My second experience with Dr. Eldred was a couple years later when he accompanied 13 boys in our Boy Scout troop for the first legs of the 215 mile John Muir Trail hike. The very first night out, our campsite was invaded by bears! They ripped holes in a couple of backpacks dragging one of them about 30 yards away from the tent. But the damage would have been a lot worse if not for Dr. Eldred. Multiple times during the night we heard Dr. Eldred sprinting through the campsite screaming at the top of his lungs chasing bears away, and boy did they run!!
A few days later during a lunch stop at Thousand Island Lake, he was educating us regarding the flora, fauna, and geology of the area.
I'll always remember these events but also remember the vitality and joie de vivre Dr. Eldred exuded, and thank him for enhancing my appreciation of the outdoors and physical exercise.

Condolence From: Russell Johnson, UCLA
Condolence: I always enjoyed visiting with Earl when he shared an emeriti office with Tom Sawyer, and seeing him at Neuroscience History Archives and at Medical Classics programs. He showed me some of his early research material--I hope that survived somehow, somewhere. And, especially, evidences of his love of Antarctica (one of his terrific photo essays—-for a trip on which Edmund Hillary was along-—is still on display in CHS corridor 3). And he certainly took pride in being one of the “aboriginals” (as Dr. Magoun called the founders) of the Anatomy department.

Respectfully,

Russell A. Johnson

Condolence: Earl was a good man, and Natalie and I are grateful to have known him while he was in the strength of his prime. Thank you for bringing us within his circle during our nearly 25 years of friendship with you (Lisa) and Dan.

Condolence: I remember when I was very young going to this restaurant called Hudson's in Simi Valley with all the grandparents (Eloise's and mine) with our families after Eloise and I performed a ballet routine at a recital in the park (maroon leotard and pink fluffy tutu). I remember so vividly sitting at the table while my grandmother spoke with Earl about her time at UCLA while he was vice chairman. Even as a young child, these two people reminiscing about their past and finally crossing paths again made an impression on me. It was also just a wonderful day in general being supported by all of our folks and receiving beautiful bouquets of flowers from our grandparents!

Condolence: My most precious memories of dear Earl where when he and I would sit on Dan and Lisa's sofa in the family room and Earl would tell me stories of his military service in the army. He was able to recall so many details of his experiences - just as if it had happened yesterday. I remember being so impressed with the amount of responsibility he was given and would be riveted to his words as he told me the details of his experiences. It was like a living history lesson. I could tell he was very proud of his service to our country. It was an impressionable part of his life and he found comfort in sharing his memories with others.

I also remember sitting next to him on that same sofa - it would have been about 9 years ago. I had just injured both my knees in a yoga class and had been to several doctors regarding a prognosis - none of which gave me a time frame for healing. Earl readily launched into his explanation of muscle spindles (and some other type of "spindle") in an attempt to explain what may have happened to my soft tissue. When I asked him how long he thought it would take for my knees to heal, he looked at me soberly and said, "It will likely take a very long time". He told me "like it was," which I needed to hear, to curb any unrealistic expectations of recovery on my part. As it turned out, it was a year-long process including countless hours of physical therapy.

Thank you, Earl, for your honesty and expertise of anatomy and injuries. I will dearly miss your intellect and your willingness to share stories of your life. You have contributed SO much to this world during your 98 years. What an amazing role model you have been to us all. I feel so privileged to have known you these past 18 years. Thank goodness your dear granddaughter Eloise befriended my daughter Breeana, or our paths would never had crossed.

You will be dearly missed by us all.
Rest in peace.
With heartfelt love,
Noreen Kovelman
