I was a member of the same Boy Scout troop that Dr. Eldred's sons belonged to in Encino, California. Dr. Eldred took three of us young scouts on our first 10-mile hike! It was a great night hike from Encino to UCLA. I still remember the feeling of accomplishment and the exhilaration of completing a challenging hike. My second experience with Dr. Eldred was a couple years later when he accompanied 13 boys in our Boy Scout troop for the first legs of the 215 mile John Muir Trail hike. The very first night out, our campsite was invaded by bears! They ripped holes in a couple of backpacks dragging one of them about 30 yards away from the tent. But the damage would have been a lot worse if not for Dr. Eldred. Multiple times during the night we heard Dr. Eldred sprinting through the campsite screaming at the top of his lungs chasing bears away, and boy did they run!! A few days later during a lunch stop at Thousand Island Lake, he was educating us regarding the flora, fauna, and geology of the area. I'll always remember these events but also remember the vitality and joie de vivre Dr. Eldred exuded, and thank him for enhancing my appreciation of the outdoors and physical exercise.
